Get ready bears, I’m scrapping plastic and teflon to live with you
Written by Shawn Smith on October 22, 2007 – 11:14 pm -My body could be 30 percent flame retardant and I don’t even know about it. That’s right, 30 percent! That means, I could be like Claire on Heroes and save people from burning buildings or roast hot dogs with my fingers (maybe).
Why am I thinking crazy like this?
Tests are showing kids’ bloodstreams contain a high concentration of industrial chemicals, including flame retardants, according to CNN.
Studies on the health effects of PBDEs are only just beginning, but many countries have heeded the warning signs they see in animal studies. Sweden banned PBDEs in 1998. The European Union banned most PBDEs in 2004. In the United States, the sole manufacturer of two kinds of PBDEs voluntarily stopped making them in 2004. A third kind, Deca, is still used in the U.S. in electrical equipment, construction material, mattresses and textiles.
There’s plenty of ways these PBDEs can get into our bodies, including foam and hard plastics.
So that means there’s no escape in civilized world. I’m heading for the mountains and only taking a sheepskin flask. Who’s coming with me?
